The salvagers are about 20 former prisoners from the New California Republic on a special work release program in Denver, salvaging stuff for NCR in exchange for their eventual freedom.

The salvagers were forced out of their original camp by the dogs and now are struggling to get by in their new, temporary camp. Tensions are high because the dog threat is constant, they have heard nothing from NCR in quite some time, and basically the only thing for them to eat is dog meat. In addition, there is a rival group of salvagers trying to steal claims, and a mysterious group of military guys making their lives even more uncomfortable.

The salvagers live in the partially-constructed buildings of Denver, several stories up and clear of the dogs (which cannot climb).

About Van Buren

Van Buren was the project name Black Isle Studios assigned to their version of Fallout 3. In 2003, the game was canceled and the Black Isle employees were laid off.

The game would have taken place in the year 2253 in the American Southwest. The Prisoner, the player character, awakens in a prison cell. Suddenly the floor rocks violently from an explosion and the player is knocked unconscious. When they awaken, they find their cell door open and a hole in the wall leading outside. Leaving the prison, the character is under attack by some unknown assailant. Deciding that discretion is the better part of valor, the player flees into the night to explore this new world.

Fallout world

The Fallout world is not quite our own. It is an alternate reality which diverged from ours at some point after the second World War.

The base concept for the setting is the World of Tomorrow as imagined in the Golden Age of Science Fiction. This means that before the Great War, the Fallout world was more or less what the people of the 1940s and 1950s thought things would be like in 2077.
